I painted this after watching swans on a local lake one evening. The way the sunset was reflecting off the water with the silhouettes of the swans gliding through it — I knew I had to paint it.
The sky was the starting point with warm oranges and pinks blending into the deeper blues above. Then the water is really just a mirror of the sky with the ripples breaking up the colours. The swans themselves are kept quite simple as dark shapes against all that warm colour.
Sometimes the simplest compositions are the most effective and I think this one proves that. Acrylics on canvas and one of those paintings that came together quite naturally.
