Night scenes have their own special atmosphere and this moonlit landscape was a lovely challenge. Working with a limited palette of dark blues and silvers with that bright moon as the focal point.
The key was getting the moonlight to look convincing — the way it catches certain surfaces and leaves everything else in deep shadow. I used acrylics and worked quite thin so the paint has a slight translucency in the sky areas which adds to that nighttime feel.
It is a peaceful scene and one of those paintings that I think works best in a quiet room where you can just sit and look at it.
