Horse and Foal

There is something really tender about a mare and foal together and that bond was what I wanted to capture in this piece.

I used pastels which give a lovely soft quality that suits the subject beautifully. The foal is all legs and curiosity while the mare has that calm protective presence beside it. Getting the proportions right between the two was important — foals have those long gangly legs that are so distinctive.

The background is kept soft and minimal to keep all the focus on the relationship between the two horses. This is one of those pieces that I think captures a real moment of tenderness.
