Elephants are incredible animals and their skin alone is a masterclass in texture. All those wrinkles and folds create an amazing surface to paint.
I worked in acrylics building up the grey tones with hints of brown and blue in the shadows. The texture was done with a combination of brush and palette knife to get that rough leathery quality. The eyes and the trunk tip are where all the expression lives so I gave those areas extra attention.
There is a real wisdom in an elephant face and I hope I have captured some of that in this piece.
